Classic Buttermilk Pie
The name has always been odd to me. Growing up in the South, these were called egg custards. The name got changed as people became convinced several years back the eggs were the cause of all cholesterol issues. Whatever! These were a dessert staple, at every Sunday dinner, packed to take top a sick neighbor, every funeral, you name it. If you did not grow up in the South, I am not sure of your traditions, but here when someone passes away, food is cooked and taken to the grieving family as a way to show that you are there for them. I hope that never goes out of fashion. Well back to the pie....simple ingredients go into this gentle creation. Local eggs, buttermilk, the best vanilla make for lip smacking goodness. You can also get this pie with coconut. Not a bad thing at all!!!
